Anthem Blue Cross and giant parent company Wellpoint have spent upwards of $3 million in Washington trying to water down or kill health care reform. They've enlisted their own employees to play politics by attending town halls as opponents of reform, and signing letters to Capitol Hill that the corporation fashioned to oppose insurance reform.

This is clearly part of a pattern. Two years ago, when California was on the cusp of adopting health care reform, Wellpoint and Anthem Blue Cross invested $2 million to kill that reform movement -- and they were successful.

Around that time, Blue Cross shipped almost a billion dollars in our health care dollars to its corporate parent in Indiana, Wellpoint, despite hundreds of complaints about premium increases, benefit cuts, denied claims, cancelled policies, and other dangerous business practices.

All of these practices, taken together, make Blue Cross the poster child for why we need health care reform.

It's time for us to speak out: Don't let Blue Cross stand in the way of health care reform. Sign our petition to Blue Cross now!

Full Petition Text:

In the first six months of this year alone, Blue Cross has sent upwards of $3 million to Washington lobbyists to fight meaningful health care reform.

A couple of years ago, Blue Cross sent almost a billion dollars in profit out of California to its corporate headquarters in Indiana.

Blue Cross is able to amass such a profit because it currently relies on business practices that harm millions of Californians, such as:

--Spending less of California's premium dollars on patient care than other larger insurers.

--Denying coverage for pre-existing conditions and instead seeking to insure only the healthy.

--Selling insurance designed to provide limited benefits, coupled with high deductibles and co-pays.

--Raising rates however and whenever it chooses.

We, the undersigned Californians, urge Blue Cross to stop standing in the way of health care reform in Washington, and in California in the form of trying to kill bills to regulate the insurance business. We also call on Blue Cross to reform its business practices, to start putting people ahead of profits and stop using California as an ATM.
